The Herald reported on Oct. 10, 1929 – “That a contract had been let for the erection of a house to be occupied by Mrs. D.B. Johnson, widow of the late Winthrop College President. The contractor is J.J. McDebitt and Co., of Charlotte. The bids opened this morning and the cost is $20,000. The house will be part of the Winthrop College property for occupancy by Mrs. Johnson as a approved by the S.C. Legislature. It will be located on Oakland Ave., adjacent to that of H.M. Dunlap. Mrs. Johnson is now the associate librarian at Winthrop College.”
