City Directories and History: The John Gill home circa 1820, was an outstanding example of architecture which took to generations of the family to complete. Take notice of the exceptional brickwork, interior chimneys and bulls eye attic windows which clearly make this a highly refined dwelling. The headers appear to be limestone but may have simply been painted to appear in that manner.
Capt. James Gill of the Huck’s Defeat or Williamson Plantation battle fame, died in 1809 after beginning his brick home on Hord Road. His son
John Gaston Gill (1795-1871) was seventeen at his father’s death and it is said he finished the house shortly thereafter. [Contribution by J.L. West]
The house was demolished in the 1950’s and it was reported that the brick could have be recycled into a building in Rock Hill, SC.
Contributor Melvin Ware stated: “This house was actually located on a section of the original dirt road that ran from Turkey Creek to the Lockhart Hwy. but was eliminated when Hord Road was paved. A new section of road was cut some distance in back of the house site to eliminate a troublesome hairpin turn where the old road went around the house. There was also a large barn located directly across the old road in front of the house. My uncle and I often hunted around this site.”
