City Directories and History: 1908 – Lee Kerr, 1922/23 – Rev. R.L. Holroyd (Margaret), Asst. Minister St John Methodist, 1925 – L. G. Huckabee and (Louis or Lois)
This house was built circa 1895 and is one of the earlier remaining houses on North Confederate. The house is covered in asbestos
shingle siding but originally would have had simple clapboards. There is a rear gabled extension which provides room for the rear kitchen wing. The style home, a common Folk Victorian cottage, was highly popular in Rock Hill’s late 19th century housing boom.The Herald reported on Jan. 5, 1910 – “The J. L. Williamson family has move from Bethesda and is occupying the Kerr house on Academy Street.”
R&R contributor Judy Nation wrote on 11/19/15 – “Aunt Lois and Uncle Landy had two daughters and Myrtle-they are listed as students. I do not remember the men. Aunt Lois and family are found in Columbia in 1938. They lived there the rest of their lives. Their grandson, Bobby Russell still lives in Columbia.”
The Herald reported on Oct. 5, 1918 – “Mr. C.S. McCrorey has resigned as manager of the Catawba Milling Company and the new manager is Mr. L.G. Huckabee.”
The SC Architects: 1885 – 1935, Wells and Dalton, 1992 – Reported, “the R. Lee Kerr home was designed by Charles C. Hook in 1898.
The McElwee Store ledger states that D. Webster Smith and wife Annie C. (Sales with J.H. Milling Co), live at this location and hold an account at the McElwee store in 1915.
