City Directories and History: The Rock Hill Herald reported on May 23, 1889 – “A joint stock company has been formed at Fort Mill for the publication of a first class newspaper with Mr. J.S. Drakeford as Editor and Manager.” (It is unclear as to the evolution of this early paper and if it had anything to do with the later Fort Mill Times.)
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Nov. 8, 1883 – “A thief entered the house of John Ford, a very worthy colored citizen and stole $26.”
The RH Herald reported on April 24, 1884 – “Mrs. L.H. Drakeford will soon commence the erection of a cottage on Banks Street. (It is unclear at to her relationship to the editor.) Later the Herald reported on June 18, 1885 – “Mr. Laura H. Drakeford has been appointed post mistress of Fort Mill. She is the widow of Capt. Joseph J. Drakeford and she replaces Mr. Seth Hotchkiss.”
The RH Herald reported on March 10, 1887 – “Mr. Norton Hotchkiss has opened up a confectionary store on Main Street two doors above Heath and Belks.” Later on April 14, 1887 the paper reported – “The Firm of Hotchkiss and Young, Connectionists, has devolved. Mr. James Young will set up a new business on his own and Mr. Hotchkiss will continue at the old stand.”
The Herald on April 21, 1887 announced – “Mr. J.S. Drakeford has opened a job printing company in Fort Mill.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on March 15, 1893, “that the Fort Mill News has suspended publication, leaving the field open to the Fort Mill Times.”
The Fort Mill Times reported on Feb. 26, 1920 – “The new building in the rear of the PO which will be occupied by the Times is nearing completion. It is considerably larger than the current building.”
