The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Nov. 19, 1885 – “Mr. Joseph Rose, grocery merchant, died suddenly in his room at the Yorkville Hotel. He was the son of Wm. E. Rose, now of Columbia. Joseph went to Sutton’s Spring about three miles from town, then returned home and died suddenly. He was twenty seven and had been in business in the storeroom of the Yorkville Hotel for about five years.”
