PLEASANT GROVE SCHOOL: A local newspaper reported this public school was somewhere near the Zadock Post Office, on Howell’s Ferry Road.
POPULAR SPRINGS REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH: In 1823, Rev. Hugh McMillan pastored this church, located in the Turkey Creek-Suzie Bowl Creek area. It is uncertain as to which side of the York- Chester County line it was situated. This congregation seems to have been absorbed into the York County churches of Sharon Associate Reform Presbyterian Church as well as Olivet Presbyterian and Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian churches.
PROSPECT METHODIST CHURCH: In 1841 a small congregation of Methodists organized this church on Beaverdam Road. The congregation relocated near what would become Hickory Grove during August 1862 and changed its name to Mount Vernon. When the original meeting house was abandoned, it was purchased by the Presbyterians for $45 to be used as meeting house for free blacks and slaves. During this time it was known as Howell-Salem Presbyterian Church, but was known as “Old Prospect” by the Methodists. A cemetery for blacks began to develop and over the years had more than 25 graves dug, most of the unmarked. The few marked represents the families of Parnell, Robinson and White. The building was moved in 1900 to Clenzo Feemster Road.
Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
