City Directories and History: R&R has divided the 1939 SCDOT map of York County into (28) sectional maps. Many of the individually listed schools and churches shown on this section are pictured. However, in many cases, the individual site also has its own post on R&R, which often provides added information and image. Be wise and use the search function to locate all of the entries for this and other homeplace listings.
This map may be viewed in its entirety by clicking on HOME to return to the SCDOT index page.
ONE TIME STUDENT GLENN SANFORD POSTED THE FOLLOWING ON DEC. 3, 2014 “I ATTENDED FIRST GRADE IN GASTON CO SCHOOLS. THE BUS DID NOT COME TO OUR HOUSE, BUT ONE MILE AWAY. MR. BUNT JACKSON TOLD MY DADDY THEY WOULD PICK ME UP AND TAKE ME TO BETHEL SCHOOL. I ATTENDED THERE UNTIL THE SEVENTH GRADE. AT THAT TIME WE MOVED TO CONCORD, N.C. I HAD SOME WONDERFUL TEACHERS AND FRIENDS AT BETHEL. I HAVE NOT SEEN THEM SINCE 1952. I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE CONTACT WITH ANY OF THEM. THAT WAS A VERY IMPORTANT TIME IN MY LIFE. I HAVE BEEN IN THE MINISTRY FOR 50 YEARS AND NOW RETIRED. HOPEFULLY SOMEONE READING THIS CAN CONTACT ME VIA E-MAIL AND CATCH ME UP ON THEIR LIVES. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU AND R&R ARE DOING FOR THE HISTORY OF YORK COUNTY.”

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
Thanks!

Hello!
I live near where Allison Creek crosses highway 49. Do you know how the creek was named Allison? If I’ve traced it right on the maps, the creek begins in Clover right off of highway 55, just west of 321.
Thanks…..I’ve been enjoying your website tonight.
I have no specific information on the naming of the creek. However, we do know it has been its historic name and most likely derives from the early Allison family, who settled York District. Wish we could assist further, keep enjoying the site – thanks! If you enjoy Facebook, give both the blog – From The Porch as well as Roots and Recall itself big likes!
