City Directories and History: R&R has divided the 1939 SCDOT map of York County into (28) sectional maps. Many of the individually listed schools and churches shown on this section are pictured. However, in many cases, the individual site also has its own post on R&R, which often provides added information and image. Be wise and use the search function to locate all of the entries for this and other homeplace listings.
This map may be viewed in its entirety by clicking on HOME to return to the SCDOT index page.
Contributor Agnes Love wrote, on July 8, 2014 – In the early 1900’s, the family lived too far from Bullocks Creek Academy and too far from McConnells school for Sam Aycock’s children to attend either. My grandfather’s wife (Annie Sanders Aycock) had died in 1914 leaving Sam to raise his three surviving children with the help of a housekeeper. When my Uncle Perry had to live with his Uncle John Aycock near Bethesda in order to attend school his first year of formal education, my grandfather deeded the lot for the school to School District 16 in 1915 and contributed materials and labor to construct Olive. As transportation improved, the children were able to attend high school in McConnells and Samuel Victor Aycock served for many years on the Board of Trustees in McConnells. My father and uncle both ended up becoming teachers and elementary school principals and Daddy actually was a teacher at Olive as was my mother.
