City Directories and History: The R. J. Castles home on Highway 97 in Smyrna was built in 1913 by Robert Jackson Castles on land originally owned by Julius Hope. The home is a two-story, hipped roof, Craftsman influenced style house with a roofed balcony over a one-story full facade, hipped roof front porch. Also included are pedimented gable ends and pilaster corner board. [Historical Properties of York County, SC – 1995]
*** Note the 1910 Walker’s map shows a J. Castles home in downtown Smyrna that is most likely that of #1030 Main Street which is one of the oldest remaining structures in Smyrna.
