HOODTOWN POST OFFICE: Located near the intersection of Highway 97 and Hoodtown Road, at the homes of the Hood and Plexico families. It was established 11 March 1884 with Samuel S. Plexico as appointed postmaster. On 5 May 1885, William L. Hood was appointed, then James S. Hood on 10 August 1889 and finally John J. Hood on 24 April 1894, who served until its closing on 14 March 1903.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Aug. 27, 1887 – “The school at Shady Grove has resumed classes for the fall term with Mr. Abernathy as the teacher.”
HOODTOWN SCHOOL: This one-room schoolhouse built around 1900 was located on Highway 97, across from Shady Grove Methodist Church. Serving the agricultural community of Hoodtown, it operated on a seven-month term so the children could be home to plant and harvest crops. Seemingly there were no restrictions on attendance; children would enroll and stop at the discretion of their parents. An earlier building, built around 1860, is reported to have served as the community’s schoolhouse. This log structure was located across the road and was used in 1873 by the Shady Grove Methodist congregation. Like other field schools, Hoodtown changed teacher yearly; some of these were: Bessie Sherer (later married Joe Plexico), Zula Horton, Rosa Jackson (married Moffet Sherer), Minnie Wickler, Lillian Quinn, a Miss Moore and Reverend Luther Latham who taught summer school. Teaching children to the eighth grade level; the room would sometimes contain anywhere between twenty to thirty students. Sometime after 1923, the school was closed when it was consolidated with Bullock’s Creek School. For a number of years, the upstairs of this building housed the Hoodtown Masonic Order (now the Palmetto Lodge) and the Woodmen of the World. The building was torn down about 1960.
