The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Oct. 24, 1872 – “A new grocery house is opening in Yorkville. The prop. are W.H. and J.P. Herndon, both worthy young men.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of May 30, 1878 contained an add for: “Turkey Creek Mills located two miles west of Yorkville. It claims one of the best mill apparatus, a Smut Machine in full operation. If you want good nice flour, take your wheat to Turkey Creek Mills and get it ground. The millers are Roberts and Dickson. On your way back home, drop by the store of W.H. Herndon and J.P. Herndon.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Nov. 18, 1880 – “The Farrar turbine water wheel is being manufactured by the Seargant Manufacturing Co., of Greensboro and it has been met with good sales. Mr. Joseph Herndon has just put one of these wheels in his Turkey Creek Mills near Yorkville and is pleased with its performance.”
HERNDON’S MILL: Located on Turkey Creek, between York and Sharon, this grist and flour mill was well established before the Civil War. Two and a half miles from York, the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railroad, constructed in 1887, passed one-quarter mile south of Herndon’s Mill.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Jan. 1, 1890 – “In the news from Blairsville, Mr. R.T. Riggins has completed the contract to building a bridge on Turkey Creek. It is well constructed and should las for many years.”
