The Yorkville Enquirer reported on April 24, 1889 – “Mr. William Strain has returned from a months visit to Trough Shoals Factory. Many of the operatives are from western York and norther Union Counties.”
City Directories and History: Post Master, Magistrate, Elder at Salem Presbyterian Church in what was originally Union County, S.C. Mr. Strain was perhaps York County’s first historian. The Museum of Western York County has transcribed much of his materials. He was also a newspaper reported and wrote for: Yorkville Enquirer, Union Times, Gaffney Ledger, and the Chester paper.

Dr. Joseph F. McCluney (1834-1900) practiced extensively in the Hickory Grove area and is buried at Salem Presbyterian Church on the Broad River.
