York for Mr. Herman to come to York County for the express purpose of teaching

RAILROADS COME TO YORK COUNTY – Several additional facts about the rail line from Columbia to Rock Hill may be of interest to the reader. First, the men from York District who attended the convention concerning the building of a railroad from Charlotte to Columbia were Colonel W. C. Beatty, William A. Latta, John Miller Ross, Robert Gadsden McCaw, William Moore, W. Giles, J. Beatty Smith, and Joel W. Rawlinson. This initial meeting of interested parties was held at Winnsboro on May 24 and 25, 1847.
Subscribers for stock in the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company on September 9 and 10, 1847, were these: Colonel W. C. Beatty, John Miller Ross, Colonel William Wright, John S. Moore, W. I. Clawson, William A. Latta, George W. Williams, Colonel Edward Avery, Harvey Hugh Drennan, Rev. Archibald Whyte, Thomas D. Spratt, James D. Spratt, A. M. White, George P. White, William E. White, and Captain John Massey.

- On July 21, 1810 William Parks took a lease for 215 acres along Bennett’s Spring Fork, p. 72
- Matt Marable received leases for two parcels on Aug. 17, 1810, p. 72, surveyed by Matt Marable and R. Auton
- Minor William E. White receives grant for 350 acres on the “Great Road to Webb’s Mill”. Pd., to both Sally New River and Col. Jacob Ayer.
- James Powell receives a lease of 100 acres on Dec. 6, 1811, p. 75
- Joseph Jackson takes lease on 240 acres on Hagler’s Branch dated Aug. 6, 1812, p. 75
- Alexander Faires receives lease on 744 acres dated Aug. 26, 1812, p. 75
- James Powell takes lease on 100 acres, p. 76 on May 4, 1813.
- William Moore takes lease on 276 acres on May 4, 1813 originally that given to Thomas Spratt, p. 76
- John Bennett takes two leases of 45.5 acres and 70 acres on May 4, 1813 along Webb’s Mill Road, p. 76
- Alexander Faires takes lease on 142 acres dated June 2, 1813, p. 76 and Silas Faires (formerly that of Alexander Faires) takes lease on 90 acres. Also on Oct. 3, 1815, Allsey Fuller takes lease of 110 acres formerly that of Alexander Faires, p. 77
- James McKee receives lease on 362 acres, formerly that of Arthur Erwin, dated March 1817, p. 78
- Silas Faires received lease on 90 acres, dated Oct. 3, 1817, p., 79
- Stephen Pettus receives a lease on 150 acres dated May 18, 1818, p. 79
- Dr. William Moore takes lease on 50 acres, “1/2 of ferry landing” dated July 14, 1820 p. 81, also James Spratt takes lease on the other 1/2 of ferry landing property, same date and page.
- John Springs III takes over lease on 888 acres formerly George Pettus’s, dated Jan. 26, 1821, p. 81
- Bartlett Meacham takes over lease on 297 acres dated Jan. 29, 1821, p. 81
- Silas Faires’s lease goes to Alsey Fuller on 66 acres, p. 81 dated Sept. 24, 1821
- On June 6, 1822 Samuel B. Pettus (Sam Pettus, Samuel Pettus), leases 150 acres, p. 82
- John Springs takes three leases on east side of the Catawba, 300, 247, and 330 acres dated June 6, 1822, p. 82
- Stephen Pettus takes over lease from Robert Bell on 150 acres, dated June 6, 1822, p. 82
- John Springs also takes over three leases via William Pettus’s Estate of undetermined acreage, dated July, 18, 1822, p. 82
