City Directories and History: The Herald reported on Dec. 5, 1896 – To Educate the Catawbas “Rev. W.G. Neville of Yorkville, Rev. C. W. Humphreys of Lancaster and Rev. O. G. Jones of Rock Hill met at the residence of Mr. Jones to confer in regard to the school recently built for the Catawba Indians on their reservation. It was decided to pursed with the work and Mrs. Dunlap, of Lancaster, Co., was selected the teacher. The Indians are pleased over the school, and have been assisting with the construction of the school room. School will be under the care of Bethel Presbytery.
The Rock Hill Record reported on March 25, 1907 – “Mr. J. Harvey Witherspoon, of Fort Mill, has asked the Attorney General for an opinion as to weather Indian children are eligible to attend white school in the state. He states that two Indian children, members of the Catawba Tribe, will apply for admission to the Fort Mill School and he is apprehensive of the result their presence will have upon the student body and is not sure whether the trustees have the right to exclude them.”
The Herald reported on May 28, 1940 – “The closing ceremony for the year was held at the Catawba Indian School. The principal is Willard M. Hayes and Mrs. W. Cornwell, Jr., is assistant principal. Graduating from the 7th grade are: Heyard Canty, Lizzy Brown, Floyd Harris and Peggy Thatcher. They plan on entering Rock Hill High School next fall.”
