The Rock Hill Herald reported on Oct. 27, 1887 – Contained a story – “of Mr. Richard Carlton, a native of Charleston, who in 1826 lived near Nations Ford with his uncle Mr. John Mills. The house was not far from Spring’s Grist Mill. He worked the farm, drove the team, and kept a store. In 1829 he went to Brazil as a poor young man. He now has a fine home and a barn full and many animals.”
