City Directories and History: The Herald reported on June 30, 1900 – “The Methodists will erect a wood church costing $1,500. at the Manchester Mill. Rev. J. Barr Harris is leading the project and has received some financial help from the mill company.”
The Herald reported on Oct. 10, 1900 – “Work will begin soon on the Methodist church at Manchester Village. It will have three levels. On the third level will be a reading room and in the basement a school for mill children.”
The Herald reported on Oct. 12, 1901 – “That the new Methodist church has been completed at the Manchester Mill village. The first brick was laid on Oct. 11, 1901 by the Rev. J. Barr Harris. The building is worth $3,000., almost all paid for.”
On Dec. 14, 1901 the Herald reported , “Rev. R.A. Wilkes and family arrived in the city and will occupy the parsonage near the graded school. He will have charge of the Manchester “Bethel” and Mt. Holly Methodist churches.”
The Herald reported on Dec. 13, 1902 – “St. John’s Methodist Episcopal Church will be dedicated tomorrow. The service will be at 11 a.m., and Bishop Duncan will be present. At night the new church at Manchester will be dedicated.”
The Herald reported on March 22, 1940 – “Rev. G.A. Baker, pastor of Bethel Methodist church in the Industrial Mill village said today, plans have been completed for moving the church to make room for an addition to the mill. The church is now on West Roy Street and it is to be rolled to the corner of Curtis and Howard Streets, about 200 ft from the site of the new Northside Baptist Church. A house will be rolled back from the Curtis Street location to make room for the church. They will add Sunday School rooms as part of the process.”
The Herald reported on Sept. 21, 1940 – “The newly remodeled building of Bethel Church on Curtis Street in the Industrial – Aragon Community has been formerly opened. It has been moved and renovated. It was originally constructed in 1900.”
