City Directories and History: Ann Hutchison White, the mother of four small children, and widow of George P. White, was required by law to report annually on her expenditures for herself, farm, and family. This report is for the year 1849-50 and lists vendors she paid during the year. Many of the annual receipts were bundled and tied with string to be discovered decades later by White family members in the attic. These are the Estate papers for her husband George P. White who died on Feb. 25, 1849, therefore the report does not include the earlier part of that year.
Ann H. White reported on the estate income for the period of 1850, funds coming in from: Mrs. Moore, work on RR, Simril’s note, hire of slave – Boy (3), cotton sales, McFadden’s note, Mrs. Schooley’s note, (J.P.) Creighton’s note, J.L. Schooley’s note, hauling fee, Cathcart’s note. Others on a second page include notes paid, lodging, rentals and more from: William Longrain for board, R.C. McCaula for board, J. Smith, T.S. Garnett, D.F. Schooley, F. Nims for lodging, Kimbrell’s account, Charles’s wages, Mr. McFadden’s note, Mr. Cathcart’s note, dividends from D. and A.S. Hutchison.
*** One of the more interesting payments was to Joseph Black (Cobbler), for the White’s slaves to have shoes. The list provides names of eight adult slaves: Jerry, John, Fed’s, (Fid), Patience, Silvy, (Silvey), Melia, Sam, and Margaret.
Accounts owned by the estate are listed as individual tags via this page. However, due to poor quality of the document, many names were deemed illegible or damaged.
