City Directories and History: 1959 – Ed and Virginia Anne Kellett, (T.E. Jones and Company), children: Eddie, Lila Anne and Howard,
In the late 50s Ed and Virginia Anne Kellett were one of Rock Hill’s most prominent and successful couples. Their home was a haven for young people, who were always made welcome! The house keeper, Ruth, made the best yeast rolls of anyone… and the Kelletts offered her rolls for many special social occasions.
Mr. Kellett was the owner-manager of T.E. Jones Furniture, of which his wife was a family member. Mrs. Kellett’s mother lived in Fountain Inn, S.C. and often visited, she was known simply as Money. The T.E. Jones stores could be found throughout the state. The Rock Hill store was operated by Ed Kellett, who built a large and successful business in downtown Rock Hill until a devastating fire destroyed the building, contents, and their livelihood. The store burned as the Kellett family worshiped across the street at Saint John’s Methodist church.
Following the fire, the family attempted to rebuilt the business but the post WWII demand for furniture had waned and the business was downsized and moved to West Main Street. Today, 2021, it is owned and operated by their son, Mr. Howard Kellett as Kellett’s Carpets.
The family also built a new home next door on the second lot owned by Banks Good. Doug and Anne Herlong purchased the Kellett home and raised their children there.
Subsequent owners of this home included: Weldon and Becky Burns (Burns Chevrolet), S.C. Judge John Hayes and his wife Mrs. Sara Lynn Hayes.
