The YE reported on May 25, 1892 – “Mr. T.Q. Odom propt. of the hotel at Hickory Grove, returned last week from a two week visit to his plantation near Bennettsville.”
City Directories and History: Samuel Wright Mitchell built a hotel in Hickory Grove beside the Three C’s Railroad in 1898. Ten years later James M. McGill, a local dry goods dealer, bought the property and operated the Hotel as a boarding house. The facility, located on Peachtree Street, served visitors to Hickory Grove arriving on the train and gained quite a reputation for its meals. In 1966, Marion G. Pratt obtained the property from the estate of J. M. McGill.
The three story building has multiple gables and hipped dormers. Diagonal ship-lap in the cornices and window hoods on the top floor dormers are prominent features of this distinguished Queen Anne style structure. [Historical Properties of York County, SC – 1995]
