City Directories and History: The original historic African American school, constructed in the 1930’s, sat on this lot. It was designed on the plans provided by the Rosenwald Foundation for rural schools. Julius Rosenwald, the head of the Sears and Roebuck Company established the educational fund to provide plans and seed money for construction of thousands of rural schools primarily in the southern states. Little government support prior to this period went into African American education.
In 1955 the historic Sharon Grove African American school was demolished to make room for the new modern Sharon Grammar School. Following integration, the north wing of the school was added, to accommodate the larger student population.
