City Directories and History: 1908 – W.M. Steele (NE Corner of East Moore and Elm)
The Charleston News and Courier of June 7, 1890 stated – “D.P. and W.M. Steele do a large merchandise business and occupy a large store opposite the Central Hotel. This is the newest firm formed in Rock Hill, until a short while, the store and merchandise was the property of J.R. Alley, who has sold his interest to these men.”
The Herald reported on Sept. 15, 1900 – “W.M. Steele and Co., will move into the corner store of the new Ratterree Building on Monday.”
Elm Avenue ran from South Trade Street to what is now South Dave Lyle Blvd., becoming one in the same.
