City Directories and History: 1908 – Joshua W. Westerland or Westerlund, Udora – listed as a tinner, 1922/23 – R.A. Minter,
The Rock Hill Herald reported on June 10, 1886 – “Mr. J.W. Westerlund has the contract to cover the cotton factory and 26 tenant houses in Lexington, N.C.”
The Herald reported on Dec. 16, 1896 – “That J.W. Westerlund is roofing the residence of Dr. J.W. Corbett in Camden, S.C.”
The Herald on Sept. 12, 1900 reported on a major fire with broke out on Saturday, Sept. 8th. The fire broke out in the Frew Machine Works. It consumed that building and moved southward to the building occupied by Morison’s Laundry, then the wooden buildings of the Rock Hill Wagon Works and the tin shop of J. Westberlund. The fire then moved to the warehouses of the Rock Hill Hardware Co., at that point, the whole of the business section of Main Street was in danger because the warehouse is connected to the Hardware Co., on Main Street. The fire company was able to slow the spread of the fire. The bakery of McElwee and Russell, connected with their store, caught fire. The warehouse of Roddey Mercantile was saved from the sparks however across Black Street, the wagon warehouse of Roddey Mercantile was damaged but not destroyed.”
The Rock Hill Herald of June 22, 1901 reported – “Fred, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Westerlund, died yesterday at home of appendicitis, he was about 17 years of age and a young man who stood in high esteem.”
The Herald reported on Nov. 23, 1901 – “That J.W. Westerlund returned from Spartanburg on Tuesday night. He has secured a contact to cover the new graded school building, now under construction there. ”
The Herald of June 7, 1902 – Mr. J.W. Westerland of Rock Hill has the contract to put a slate roof and do the plumbing and tin work at the new Lancaster Graded School. Bird and Porter of Lancaster has the general contract for the $15,000. contract.
The Herald on May 2, 1903 reported that J.W. Westerland went to Kershaw, where he has several contracts for covering and guttering store houses. He also has contract in Bishopville and Pinewood in the lower part of the state.”
The McElwee Store ledger states that Mr. Westerland hold an account at the store in 1915. Listed as general roofing contractor corner Chatham and West Main Street.
