The Rock Hill Herald reported on Feb. 19, 1916 – “Construction will start soon on the home of H.B. Powell on the lot on the corner of Saluda and Johnston streets. It will be of brick veneer construction.” Later the Herald reported on March 23, 1916 – “The fire alarm was sounded this afternoon for a blaze on the roof of the residence on Marion St., occupied by H.M. Powell. The fire originated from the kitchen flue and only slight damage was done.” (It is unknown as the the relationship of H.B. Powell and H.M. Powell)

The H.B. Powell family lived here for decades prior to moving to Oakland Avenue. Their property on Oakland was demolished to make room for the Walgreen Pharmacy. In 2013 the Workman Oil Company is located on the site of the original Powell home.
The Herald reported on Dec. 18, 1911 – “That L.P. Sloop and family, of Chicago, have arrived in Rock Hill and have taken rooms at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Powell on Saluda Street.” Mr. Sloop is with the Anderson Motor Company.
The RH Herald reported on March 18, 1916 – “T.K. Nicholson has been awarded contracts for electrical work on three residences. The first is Capt. J.R. Barxtell on Caldwell St., which is being rebuilt. Secondly is the new house which H.B. Powell will have erected at the corner of Johnston and Saluda Streets. And the third is the W.M. Mitchell home on West Main Street which will be rebuilt.”
The Herald reported on May 26, 1925 – “That H.B. Powell had received a building permit to conduct repairs on a house on Saluda Street.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Dec. 1, 1941 – “Mr. and Mrs. J. Gordon Collier and family have moved from 259 Johnston Street to the former R.H. Cowan house on East Main Street.”
