City Directories and History: From the Rock Hill Herald of July 13, 1933: The National Recovery Act (NRA), one of the Depression-Era federal agencies, had a nation-wide program to encourage businesses to keep prices reasonable during the depths of the Depression. During the summer of 1933, the Herald had a number of ads by business groups advertising their prices and pricing policies. The following ad appeared listing standard prices for 17 barber shops listed in Rock Hill.
Prices agreed to by the shops were as follows:
Haircut – 35 cents
Shave – 20 cents
Shampoo – 35 cents (with hot oil 50 cents)
Massage – 35 cents
Singe – 25 cents
Steam – 35 cents
Tonics – 25 cents
Baths – 25 cents
