City Directories and History: 1963 – Ralph S. McCallum, 1975 – Same
Dozens of lovely antebellum and late 19th century homes once lined the avenue leading down Ebenezer Road. Families who had lived in the village were proud of their independence, their Scots-Irish heritage, their devotion to Ebenezer Presbyterian church and held a high esteem of the need for education. One of these houses remains, the Bass house, which was constructed on one of the highest points along the route. Mr. Anderson Bass lived here with his family. They were owners of the Bass Furniture Company and later the Bass Funeral home business that bears their name in 2013.
The was a grand architectural gem showing off their economic well being by combining elements of architecture to make a very pleasing and distinct home. The interior features of the dwelling provide the best glimmer of how they lived, with elaborate Victorian mantels, a beautiful turned staircase, wide board floors, bedded ceiling and large windows.
This parcel was the long-term home of the McCallum family for more than five decades. The house is next to KFC.
