City Directories and History: 1917 – Catawba Lumber Company, 1922/23 – Same, 1946 – (#148) – Catawba Lumber Company, 1964 – (#154-158) Catawba Lumber, 1975 – (#154)
Catawba Lumber Company was one of Rock Hill’s oldest and largest home – lumber supply companies until the mid 1970’s when it abruptly went out of business.
The Rock Hill Herald on Jan. 11, 1902 reported, “Mr. U.M. Pursley of Ramah lost as dry kiln last Monday together with about 7,500 ft of lumber. The kiln probably caught from a spark.”
The Record reported on March 31, 1927 – “That the safe of the Catawba Lumber Company on West Main Street was entered by a burglar and about $100. was stolen. There was also an attempt to enter the Tri-City Fruit Company and recent attempts at the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Company and Cooper Furniture Company.”
The Rock Hill Journal of Sept. 9, 1902 – “Attention is directed to contractor W. M. Mitchell, whose lumber yard is located near the old oil mill switch, (railroad sidetrack to the Rock Hill Oil Mill), and who carries on hand, a complete stock of builders supplies.” On Oct. 24, an ad ran stating his office was on West Main St., near the Rock Hill Steam Laundry.
