All of the businesses and houses once standing along West Black Street, between Dave Lyle Blvd., and South Wilson Street have been demolished as part of 1960s Urban Renewal. Help rebuild these addresses one at a time on the pages of Roots and Recall. Numerous addresses have been reconstructed due to R&R’s ongoing efforts to preserve local African American culture and history.
Also see African American Drug Stores for additional information. Also see the Urban Renewal image for a 1950’s look at the area.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
Thanks!
