City Directories and History: 1958 – Paul Stroud, 1978 – Virginia Stroud
This house was an infill next to the Giles J. Patterson House and therefore does not show up on the attached Sanborn Insurance Maps from 1917. According to one source the house was constructed somewhere between the late 1920’s and 1940. However, the local historical society reports the original house was moved to 160 York Street, now the Leard – Latimer house. The late Craftsman style home circa 1935, belonged to William P. Stroud and his wife, Virginia who owned the Chester Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company.
“Chester Laundry and Cleaners has been located at 107 West End since 1921, but at that time it was known as the Chester Steam Laundry. Dr. Stewart W. Pryor of the Pryor Hospital realized the need for a commercial laundry to handle the enormous amount of linens from the hospital and thus was important in establishing the Chester Steam Laundry. Thirty years later, George Whitesides bought the laundry from W.P. Stroud, and with the development of dry cleaning, changed its name to Chester Laundry and Cleaners.”
