Cork Family gathering – exploring the old homplace, 2016.

Farmers delivered their picked cotton to local gins within reasonable hauling distances of their farms. Many of these gin operations were owned by the local merchant who in essence acted as a banker. He often supplied the farmer with fertilizer, seed, credit and equipment during the year and carried the loan until it was paid off with the sale of the farmer’s cotton in the fall. Unfortunately, farmers often failed to profit from their crops and lost their property to the local merchants for non payment. This invoice was from the bagging and tie company of Charleston, S.C. They supplied the necessary course cloth and ties to bind the ginned cotton for shipping.
