City Directories and History: The David McCain, Sr., home was constructed in circa 1917 overlooking Broad Street and near the McCain’s Grocery. Originally it was owned by a group of Northern hunters who would visit Richburg and use the house as their
headquarters. But it was best known as the dental office of Dr. Isaiah Simpson, a Rock Hill dentist. Dr. Simpson would take the train from Rock Hill to Chester and back to Richburg on the L and C railroad line.
The few pupils were learning everything from ABC’s to foreign languages. From there some of the pupils entered the best colleges. Bruno, the large Newfoundland dog, often came with his master, Ira Hicklin, and occupied the space on one side of the wood stove on cold days. When the floor fell out of this building, school was held for a while in the upstairs of the old Nunnery house which stood where David McCain now lives. [Memories of Richburg, SC by Lucy Clawson]
