City Directories and History: 1908 – James Hamilton, Bettie Hamilton, 1940 – Bessie L. Hamilton, Hermon P. Hamilton, 1958 – Helen H. Dunbar, B.A. Head, Janie W. Winn, 1978 – Pam McDowell
The YV Enquirer reported on Dec. 16, 1891 – “Four nice homes are being erected on Pine Street, and the West End street is also booming.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of March 4, 1891 reported, “Mr. C.C. Edwards has moved into the house formerly occupied by Thomas N. Berry.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of Jan. 6, 1892 reported, “Col. T.N. Berry has withdrawn from the firm of Berry and Hamilton. James H. Hamilton will continue the business and Mr. Berry will devote his entire time to insurance.”
A simplified Queen Anne style home, highly popular through the region, this circa 1905 home features a front porch pediment at the steps, turned columns with square section baluster railings. Mr. James Hamilton, the City Engineer and Superintendent of Streets, purchased this property from the deacons of Purity Presbyterian Church. His son, Herman P. Hamilton, operator of the Chester Opera House and continued living in the family home.
This home like so many in the Chester community, was built on the simple four square plan, that became so popular in the early 20th century. This house however lacks many of the finer features of the high style often seen along major street such as Oakland Avenue in Rock Hill or Lyttleton Street in Camden.
