“A stop on the Varina Davis Trail.”
City Directories and History: Salem Presbyterian Church was built on land given by the Means family. Governor John H. Means was an elder in this church as was his brother, E.J. Means. The original church building constructed in 1812, burned and the current facility was constructed. It was here that Confederate State of America, First Lady, Varina Davis stopped on her route through Fairfield County at the close of the Civil War.
