City Directories and History: This dwelling is reported to have been constructed in circa 1840. It was moved from South Congress Street to this location and later moved to the country for remodeling.
This handsome building was saved by moving it to a new location for restoration: Turkey Creek Road Dr. McCants built his hospital in the 1920’s adjacent his family home on the corner of Congress and Moultrie Sts. When Winn Dixie offered to lease the property from Dr. McCants they moved the home to the back of the lot and tore down this building….perhaps in the late fifties. Dr. McCants moved his offices into his family home until he retired.
The McCants Hospital was the only semblance of a hospital until Fairfield Memorial opened in 1954 with county backing. The best news is that the beautiful McCants house was removed and rebuilt in northern Fairfield County and is as beautiful as it was in 1850s. (Courtesy of Bubba Lyles 8.14.16)
