City Directories and History: The Charles Boyd survey map of Chester Co., S.C. provides hundreds of interesting names. One of these is that of the Moman Family: Moman’s Ferry and Moman’s Mill. Though little has been found about the family or history, R&R’s Kelly Barge Collection, does list river bargeman, Wm. Kelly of Newberry and Union Counties delivering goods to James Moman (spelled Moorman) on Sept. 22, 1817. This happens to be the earliest document in the collection associated with river traffic.
Moman’s (Moorman’s)Ferry was located just above Fish Dam Ford on the Broad River.
An Act of 1815 authorized that the ferry on Broad river, called Crosby’s Ferry, near the Fish Dam Ford, the property of James and Thomas Moorman, be reestablished and vested in them for seven years, provided the Spelsby Glenn may operate a ferry from the opposite bank….
