City Directories and History: The Yorkville Enquirer reported on March 28, 1872 – “Major George W. Melton of Chester has purchased a controlling interest in the Kings Mountain Railroad. He has become Pres. and two vacancies on the board have been filled by Chester men, John J. McLure and J. Harvey Smith. The new management plans to put the roadbed in good order, add new cars and equipment, and to begin a daily schedule.” Later on May 30th the paper also stated – “The NC company organized to build a narrow gauge railroad to connect with the Kings Mountain Railroad is now soliciting stock. As soon as $10,000. is secured they will organize a corporation and proceed with construction to extend the line to Lenior.”
