City Directories and History: The Rock Hill Herald reported on Jan. 15, 1885 – “The store of D.H. Gordon and Brother at Fort Lawn was consumed by fire and all their goods were lost for an estimated loss of $6,000.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Sept. 15, 1886 – “At a recent meeting of Bethel Pres., it was reported that new church buildings have been erected at Fort Lawn and at Fishing Creek Factory. Presbytery approved a commission to organize these two churches.”
The RH Herald reported on Dec. 1, 1887 (An Ad) – “A plantation for sale by Robert Morrison located about two miles from Fort Lawn on Derry’s Branch and known as the Bill Wilson place. The farm has a dwelling and outbuildings and contains 145 acres about 75 acres in old forest.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Oct. 25, 1888 – “Fire at the Fort Lawn depot damaged 21 bales of cotton. The cotton had been consigned to Heath, Springs and Co., of Lancaster.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Feb. 1, 1893 – “Fire has destroyed the dwelling of Mr. T.R. Howze near Fort Lawn at a loss of $1,300.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on July 19, 1899 – “The work on the piers for the new bridge of the Lancaster and Chester Railroad to be erected over the Catawba River has been completed and the iron structure is now being put in place.”
The Herald reported on Nov. 30, 1901 – “That there was a costly fire in Fort Lawn on Wednesday. The fire destroyed the residence of Mrs. T.R. Howze, the ginnery of Child’s – Edwards, and the cotton seed house of Daniel and _(Hicks)____.”
The Rock Hill Herald on Dec. 21, 1901 – “The firm of Daniel and Hicks in Fort Lawn has been dissolved. Mr. Hicks withdrew and Mr. Daniel will continue the business.”
The Herald reported on Jan. 24, 1903 – “Ms. Maggie Biggers went to Fort Lawn on Monday to assist Prof. Douglas as teacher in the school.”
The Rock Hill Herald on March 28, 1903 reported that the Fort Lawn School authorities have elected Ms. Maggie Biggers of Rock Hill to another term as teacher.”
The Herald on April 8, 1903 – “Mr. C.H. Miller, who has been teaching school at Fort Lawn, has returned to the city his school having closed several days ago.”
The Rock Hill Record reported on Dec. 14, 1908 – “Mrs. J.H. Black, who lives on the Newman Hudson place near Fort Lawn, lost her house and contents to a fire Thursday night.” (Dec. 10, 1908)
The RH Record reported on Dec. 21, 1908 contained an ad for the Fort Lawn Live Stock and Mercantile Co., W.L. Abernathy, Manager of the Livestock Dept.”
The Fort Mill Times reported, a Chester Special – “The renewed activity of the Southern Power Company in acquiring property and water rights along the Catawba River and Fishing Creek, near Fort Lawn, indicates that the development of water power on Fishing Creek in Chester County is close at hand. Purchasing land from Mr. M.E. Jordan, Mrs. J.L. Young, Capt. Barnett, and d Mr. John E. Jordan” Sept. 23, 1909
The Rock Hill Record of Feb. 8, 1909 reported – “Architect J.S. Starr is building a house valued at $4,000. at Fort Lawn for Mr. C.L. Dunlap.”
The Rock Hill Record reported on June 14, 1909 – “The Methodist Church in Fort Lawn was dedicated yesterday. A new organ has been purchased from Epworth. Mr. W.P. Roddey gave money and spent much time working on the building. The pastor, is W. Smith Martin.”
On April 12, 1916 the Herald reported – “E.L. Barnes, Pres. of the RH Telephone Co., announced to the chamber of commerce that they had purchased the Fort Lawn Telephone Company.”
The Herald reported on May 11, 1922 – “That Fort Lawn had a damaging thunder storm. The store of J.G. Cousar was set afire by lightening and completely destroyed.”
The Fort Lawn Grammar and High School – The RH Herald on Sept. 23, 1940 reported – “The school burned on Saturday it was a six room brick building with an auditorium and the loss is about $15,000. Rebuilding will start soon and classes will be held temporary at the Baptist and Methodist churches.”
