The Yorkville Enquirer of Oct. 20, 1881 reported – “The dwelling house of Mrs. Mouncy Evans near Armenia Church was destroyed by fire, along with her smoke house, cotton house and kitchen.”
City Directories and History: A number of farm and sharecropper account books dating in the 1880 – 90s, were provided R&R, for digitization and sharing in 2016. These books were kept by members of the Oates Family in Chester, S.C. The Oates farm encompassed much of what is today the western sections of Center Street. The donor of these collections, stated, “Grandpa would often pay the farm help from his house window.” Excerpts, misc. pages, from the account books are provided below for a number of select pages. However, only a few pages are exhibited!
Names associated with the account – journals are tagged to this R&R page. For example, Elen Bratton’s name may appear in the account book, but her associated page(s) from the journals, do not exhibited on this R&R page. However, her name is tagged to this R&R page showing that she had an account in the journal. Names in these journals are often spelled differently than one would expect.
Also see a second journal with many of the same names listed: Chester Farm Journals 1894 – 1898.
