City Directories and History: This handsome home was constructed for Dr. and Mrs. William Jesse Williams Cornwell (1841-1910), a kinsman and close friend of
contractor, A.D. Holler of Rock Hill. Mr. Holler’s own home on West Main street in Rock Hill served as the model of the this home at Cornwell. However, his was a two story model. Mr. Holler built extensively throughout the region, constructing fine homes, cotton mills, and even Winthrop University’s main building. Family members have stated, “Dr. Cornwell, having only one child requested the construction of his home in a one story form since he knew there was no need for additional space for a large family. “
The Cornwell’s daughter, Mary, (married the Rev. Elwood A. Holler of Rock Hill) who was often seen in her parent’s home and in the Chester County community of Cornwell. The home later was acquired by the Taylor family who has cared for the historic structure for decades.
