Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Bell were a community oriented couple who were highly instrumental in helping with historic preservation and records keeping. Their portraits hang in the Chester library. (Chester Telephone Company)
The Rock Hill Record reported on July 9, 1908 that – “the local Chester Phone Office was destroyed by fire and residences will be without phone service for at least a month. The second floor of the building was badly burned and the switchboard and other equipment was destroyed. The operators Mattie and Maurice Gladden, were unable to fight the fire. Pres. of the Co., R.R. Hafner and Manager is John Bell.”
