Prior to the coming of the Schlosburg Department Store (Incert – Schlosburg’s – 1924), this location was the site of the Edisonia Theatre in circa, 1912. But wanting to expand, Schlosburg’s Department stores dotted the region prior to the Great Depression and had opened in Chester. Originally started in Camden, S.C., the business expanded to Chester in hopes that it could compete with the likes of the Wylie Company. However, the financial collapse of the stock markets also doomed Schlosburg’s hope of expansion after only five years in business at this location. See R&R’s Camden site (coming soon) for additional details on the Schlosburg family. Later this location was used for numerous business ventures, non of which lasted long.
WU’s Pettus Archives has plans for this building by Rock Hill architect, Mr. A.D. Gilchrist dated, May 1923.
“The Jewish community in Camden drew together even more closely as difficult times increased in the 1930s. Their local numbers are suggested by the list of stores closing for Rosh Hashanah in 1931: the Fashion Shop, M. H. Heyman, Hirsch Brothers & Co., the Leader, L. Lomansky Shoe Store, the Outlook Shoppe, Schlosburg, I. Wolfe, and Wolfe-Eichel Co. The Hebrew Benevolent Society was active, supported by Hebrew Menand byWomen of the Camden Temple Sisterhood.” (Information courtesy of A History of Kershaw County, S.C. by Joan A. Inabinet and L.
