City Directories and History: Carmel Presbyterian Church, organized in 1869, was constructed in close proximity to the Baptist church, next door, which both served the same local community of workers and their families of African American heritage. Additional research would most likely show each church receiving substantial support from both individuals, the Chester community, as well as the industries in which these families worked. Both church buildings are equally handsome and reflect the strong support of the community in providing support for religious institutions in close proximity to the industrial corridors. This benevolent attitude may have stemmed from both the desire to support the established church but equally to insure the community remained segregated along economic as well as racial lines.
The original congregation was established around the leadership of the Rev. Samuel Loomis of the New York Presbyterian Home Mission Board as part of the Brainerd Institute’s mission to bring educational opportunities to the Chester area. The current brick church was built in circa 1924.
Note that the Springstein Cotton Mill is adjoining the church property.
