The Yorkville Enquirer reported on July 5, 1877 – “There are two public schools in Chester, one under Mrs. Thomas DeGraffenreid and the other under Ms. Lizzie Cornwell.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Jan. 21, 1891 – “The firm of Joseph A. Walker and Co., has been dissolved.”
Constructed in circa 1892 by Joseph Walker, a merchant, who purchased the property and the academy that stood at the corner of the lot, demolished. It has been stated that many of the brick from the old school were used in the construction of his new home.
The photo of 3rd and 4th grade students include the following description: Teachers were John C. Douglas and a Mrs. Bland. Front row: Jimmy Daniel, UN, Cal Ratteree, Raymond Thompson, Ned Graham, Hal Murphy, Nivon Stringfellow, and Frank Spratt. Second row: Sadie Gunhouse, Blanch Gunhouse, Elfrieda Nail, Manie Ferguson, Angie Thompson, America Ratterree, and Ethel Cross. Third row: Mamie Reid, Jeffrey Steinkuhler, —Allen, Mary McAliley, Edna McClure, Cornwell Hardin, Lola Hardin, Minnie Timmie, Mary Owen, —– (Young). Fourth row: Fate Mills, Sara Coleman, Annie C. Morgan, Eugenia Jaggers, Beatrice Walker, Alexa McClure, Belle Simril, Maude Reid, and —- Pithard. Fifth row: Lucia Mills, George McFadden, Henry White, McFadden Neely, Joe Clad, Gus Ferrell, Pete Ferrell, Glenn Carroll, and Albert Steinkuhler.

I do not see in the feature where Academy St is located. I am assuming Chester city. Is that correct?
