City Directories and History: Bethel United Methodist Church
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on July 20, 1871 – “Work has been commenced on a new Methodist Church in Chester, it will be brick.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on July 3, 1889 – “The Methodist Church has lately been supplied with a handsome new organ.”
Designed by the Atlanta architectural firm of Hayden and Wheeler, this Romanesque style brick church costs $9,920., to construct in 1897. This church building was the third in which Bethel’s
congregation worshiped and the addition of the educational wing by Southern Construction Company in 1925-27 was finished at a cost of over forty-two thousand. The outstanding stained glass windows in the church commemorate those who started the Methodist church in Chester and originally the parsonage, behind the church served as the second location of the congregation.
The addition of the educational building cost $42,142. and was built by the Southern Construction Company of Charlotte, N.C. in 1925-27.
