The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Oct. 1, 1890 – “Mr. Nicholson has torn down the kitchen at the rear of his hotel and will build a new and larger one. He has also repainted and decorated the room.”
City Directories and History: 1902 – Nicholson Hotel, 1917 – Hotel Myers or Myers Hotel
In 1911, Edgar Poag of Rock Hill, a leading land salesman in the region put up for auction the Mitchel Hotel and the house next door on Lancaster Street.
The Herald reported on Sept. 16, 1901 – “The Nicholson Hotel in Chester burned Saturday night. It has been a popular hotel for more than forty years. Much of the furniture was saved. The property belonged to Mrs. T.K. Cunningham of Lancaster, S.C.”
The Herald reported on Aug. 16, 1902 – “The suit over the ownership of the Nicholson Hotel in Chester has been settled. A.H. Greene and son, sued Mrs. Callie P. Cunningham and are now in possession. The hotel includes 36 bedrooms, dining room, a parlor, and has electric lights, water, call bells, with bath and toilets on each floor. It has been rebuilt after the fire earlier this year and has new furniture, mattresses, wallpaper, crockery and table service. The property also includes a barn. Mr. Gib. H. Greene is in charge, assisted by J. Ed Sadler clerk.“
The Herald reported on Sept. 3, 1902 – “The Hotel Chester is now open with A.H. Greene and son proprietors and Mr. Sadler, clerk.”
The Rock Hill Record reported from the Chester Reporter on Feb. 28, 1907 – “Walter R. Henderson, who has been manager of the Hotel Chester since it has been under the control of A. N. Sample, will leave in a few days to take charge of the Workman House in Camden, which was recently purchased by Mr. Sample.”
The RH Record reported on Oct. 8, 1908 – “Mr. S.W. Mitchell of Lancaster has bought the Nicholson Hotel at the Chester Depot from Mr. A.N. Sample. Mr. Mitchell is presently running the Hotel Royal in Lancaster. He has rented the McCarley cottage adjoining the hotel property and will occupy it with his family.”
The RH Record reported on Feb. 15, 1909 – “A fire was reported in Chester in the building owned by J.E. Sanders and occupied by B.E. Wright, with a stock of groceries. The building is about halfway between the Southern Passenger Railroad Station and the Mitchell House.”
The Rock Hill Record from Oct. 23, 1911 – “The Mitchell Hotel property in Chester has been sold to S.E. McFadden and his partners, John Frazier, C.C. Edward, L.D. Childs, and W.M. Love, M.D. The price was $12,903.00 and the broker was J.E. Poag of Rock Hill, S.C.”
