City Directories and History: 1940 – Foote’s Grocery,
The Yorkville Enquirer reported Feb. 10, 1870 – “The Liberty Pole located in the center of Chester was blown down on Feb. 1st by a heavy gale. It was originally used by U.S. soilders garrisoned in Chester as the mast head from which to fly the Stars and Stripes.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of Nov. 19, 1885 reported – “Mrs. G.L. Morgan of Savannah was in Chester last week for the purpose of establishing a circulating library. She represents the Franklin Square publishing Co., of Louisville, Kentucky.”
The library building displaced several commercial buildings along Center Street. Notice the Sanborn Map for the number located along this busy street in 1917.
