City Directories and History: As most early African American churches did, they started schools shortly after the Civil War to provide education for their children. The Foundation provided seed money for construction as long as the school was constructed on the plans provided and approved by the Rosenwald Foundation. The Howard School was constructed in about 1925 using the Rosenwald Fund, local labor, and state assistance.
