City Directories and History: This major Kershaw home, that of John Thomas Stevens, was constructed in about 1890. This was the home of one of Kershaw’s leading citizens and the founder of the Kershaw Cotton Mill and Stevens Oil Company.
The Rock Hill Record reported on May 30, 1912 – “The Kershaw Cotton Mill of Kershaw, S.C. has been established with a capital stock of $200,000. The leaders are: Col. Leroy Springs of Lancaster, John T. Stevens, J.M. Carson, E.D. Blakeney, and Dr. L.T. Gregory of Kershaw.”
