City Directories and History: The historic Rock Creek Baptist Church in the Blair Section of Fairfield County was an early upcountry Baptist Church. See histories under: More Information > in the picture column.
Contributor wrote, “The church was originally located in Strother.
It is now Blair, as Strother, no longer exists. Also included is the one room school house. I know my great grandmother went to school here in the 1880’s and my grandmother in the early 1900’s”. (2015)
The area southeast of Blair and northwest of Monticello, surrounding Rock Creek Baptist Church, has long been known as the Rock Creek Community. The community name originally derived from the small stream, Rocky Creek, which passes through the area. Rocky Creek, or Rocky Branch, appears on Colonial land plats as early as the 1750’s. When the Baptists formed a congregation in 1789, they were first known as Rocky Creek Baptist or Rocky Creek Baptist Church of Broad River. The site of the first church was about three miles east of the Broad River, between Beaver Creek and Rocky Creek. The church is now located south of Rocky Creek. In the early 1800’s, Rock Creek School was established on the church grounds and continued educating the area’s youth until well into this century.
