City Directories and History: Images taken of this dwelling in 1983 reveal that it was in poor decline and clearly not going to last much longer. It shows that many rural homes had shutters only on the second floor living spaces of these once handsome dwellings. Glass was expensive and shutters were often used exclusively on the second level. This was a massive five bay home called a Carolina “I” house style which unlike most, did not have end exterior chimneys, rather a large chimney on the rear. From the mantel style to that of the home’s exterior appearance, R&R would judge that this dwelling was constructed on the eve of the Civil War, circa 1855.
