The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Aug. 28, 1884 – “The barn, stables and carriage house of Mr. R.H. Jennings, a short distance from Winnsboro, was destroyed by fire last Thursday. Also lost were two mules, a wagon, and forage. The total loss is estimated at $1,200.”
City Directories and History: George Alexander Robinson and his wife, Nannie Watt Robinson, built this house in the early 1900s. Prior to their purchasing the property, the Robert H. Jennings family had owned it and there was a post office there known as Jennings. Mr. Robinson was known as “Eck” and was a prominent planter and community leader serving as superintendent of the Bethel Methodist Church. He and his wife had three daughters. They were Rebecca Louise, Jessie Marguerite, and Helen Elizabeth. Marguerite, known as “Rite” married M. Rupert Jackson of Hendersonville, North Carolina. They ran the Jackson Flower Shop for many years in Hendersonville. Helen married Shafter Otis Taylor “SO” and Rebecca never married. Miss Beck was the beloved third grade teacher at Mt. Zion school in Winnsboro for many years and Mrs. Taylor was the well-respected English and Distributive Education teacher at both Mount Zion and Winnsboro High School. Mrs. Taylor is also remembered for her teaching Sunday school at Bethel Methodist Church and her sister, Rebecca, is remembered for her artistic talents. Their home was often opened to ministers, friends, and family and they were known for their gracious hospitality. After their deaths and that of their sister, the house was inherited by Betty Jackson Baker. She and her husband, Richard “Dick” spent time there on the weekends and special occasions and their son, Gary, lived there for a number of years until the property was sold to Ted Cummings. The house is known for the two large magnolias, which frame it, as well as the picket fence, which encloses the front yard. [Contribution by Ben Hornsby]
